  • A little funky at first after pop and pour. Settled down after sitting in the glass. Very dark garnet, showing red at the rim. Showing its age in the nose, but still expressive with iron, smoked meat. Sweetish fruit in the mouth, round and ripe, with a lingering aftertaste. Paid close to $80 for this, about right. No more upside, but not much on the downside. Drink now. 4-12-15-7: 89/100.

  • Very nice wine. Great nose. Layers of fruit. Complex. Excellent finish.

  • Five years since my last bottle, and time has served this wine beautifully. It has now settled into a place of splendid balance, with the power muted just enough to allow the complex array of underlying flavors to emerge: spicy red and black fruit, black and green pepper, apricot and clove. A chewy, voluptuous texture, and a very long finish, add to the wine's appeal.

  • I bought a lot of Australian Shiraz in the early 2000s, some of which was too big to have with food and did not live up to the hype. However, this bottle was definitely not one of those. This was delicious! Still nice color, and rich, concentrated fruit in the nose and flavor, plums, black cherries, leather, and tobacco. What a pleasant surprise. Smooth soft tannins and no hint of the alcohol level. Very well balanced, full bodied, with nice complexity and a long smooth finish. This could probably go longer, but why wait?

  • Deep garnet core - not showing much age at all. Vanilla and plum on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, with fairly high (but balanced) acidity and no discernible tannins. The palate mirrors the nose (vanilla and sweet plums) and the alcohol is somewhat noticeable at first, but less so after a couple of hours in the decanter. Don't get me wrong: this is a very well made and concentrated wine. Just not what I was expecting from a 17 year old Shiraz. Tasted blind, I probably would have guessed this was about 3 to 5 years old. It's still very primary and rather monolithic, showing no secondary flavors at all. If I had more, I would definitely hold some back to see if it will evolve into something more interesting. For now, it's very solid but still simple and straighforward.
