A Taste of History: The Leacock Family Madeiras (revisited) (The J.P. Morgan Mansion, NYC): This wine was just singing today, showing a bit better than in San Francisco for me. Rich, layered and long. Although very concentrated, it was kept refreshing with lively citrus skin tartness. An intriguing “wintergreen” note added further lift. Fantastic wine that I kept coming back to, even after the “big guns”, without tiring of.

A Taste of History: The Leacock Family Madeiras (Hotel Monaco, San Francisco, CA): Dark, but not as much as the 1896 HFS "E" that preceded this. More "sweet" bottle aged flavors, although not as expressive as the previous wine. Medium sweet, elegant and nice juicy acidity, although again, not as precise as the previous wine. Lovely wine, but for me, overshadowed by the 1896 HFS "E". This is believed to have been laid down for Julian Philip, born in 1893, the son of John Milburne Leacock.

(Unknown Madeira HFS "JPW") Medium orange color with red lights and tiny bits of sediment floating at the bottom of the glass; reduction, mature lemon, tart lemon and apricot nose; sweeter than the HFS "E," with palate of tart pear, tart orange, smoky tart apricot and a sense of chalk, delicate and reminiscent of a good, aged, tart Sauternes; medium-plus finish [From the Leacock Christie's 12/11/08 auction: Thought to have been laid down in the late 1890 for one of John Milburne Leacock's sons, Julian Philip, who was born in 1893.]
