Big red black fruit nose touch of herbs and slightly gamy. Big mouth feel rich and savoury. Not as fruity as the usual piont still very tasty in a more savoury style. The wine is obviously very very young, but with many Owen Roe wines, I expected a great wine and wasn't disappointed. I'd recommend holding onto it for at least another year but I can say that it got better with the next glass. We ordered this to pair with a mixed set of dishes: steak, scotch beef and a white fish. It just seemed more evolved than the others. Strawberry fruit, a touch of leather and earth. Much deeper in flavor and color than the previous vintage. (462 views) | | | Tasted by dickjokes on 9/2/2009 & rated 90 points: Amazing balance and smoothness for a wine at this price point. Nice fruit, but so smooth with a perfect intensity and weight. So good at this price, and on that I will be purchasing more. Nice spicy strawberry, cranberry, white pepper and of course underlying shrooms. Very young and quite tight at the moment. An excellent value. (540 views) | | | Tasted by gjport on 6/28/2009 & rated 88 points: Rather typical color for an Oregon Pinot, perhaps a touch darker, deeper ruby. On the nose, not much funk, but some very pleasant, bright fruitiness, mostly of blackberry and blueberry. I also got a whiff of butterscotch, which I liked. Although a bit lite on the palate, there's lots of fruit, with some tartness. Finish was pleasant, but short. This wine is a baby, and it has a distance to go before presenting its true colors. I like its potential. (631 views) |

With vineyards throughout the Pacific Northwest, Owen Roe, named after a 17th century Irish patriot who dedicated his life to political equality and freedom, is owned and run by Jerry Owen and David O'Reilly (winemaker). Their aim is to source only the very best fruit from top sites in Oregon and Washington, handle it gently in the winery, and produce wines of superior balance and quality.
From winery: The 2008 Sharecroppers Pinot Noir was sourced from several sites in the Northern Willamette Valley, predominately the Eola-Amity Hills and the Yamhill-Carlton District. The long Indian Summer of 2008 allowed unusually deep aromatic development while the mild temperatures helped to preserve excellent crisp acidity. This vintage is well balanced with a lovely plush texture and deep rich flavors of red cherries, cola, and coffee. 2008 is a gorgeous vintage not to be missed!
About red wine
Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.
