  • Decanted and served over several hours. Cork was saturated and the fill was top shoulder. This started out really bad and definitely improved with some aeration (I put some through an aerator 6 times and it was appreciably better) but this never rose to the level of a memorable wine, in contrast to my most recent bottle of 1970 Lascombes which was acquired from the same cellar source. Initially it was all licorice and coffee but with air this faded and became more chocolate and eucalyptus with some red currant. It was initially very bricked and with air got darker and significantly less old looking. This just never seemed to improve enough to be enjoyable, though it wasn’t undrinkable and certainly did not seem flawed. Just well past its prime.

  • The 1970 Léoville Poyferré is a good representation of the vintage as a whole, the fruit now fading gracefully (here with dried red cherry and redcurrant) while matched with tannins that still manage to coat the mouth at 52 years of age. The most pleasure here is in the panoply of mature Bordeaux notes found between 5 and 30 minutes in the decanter - leather, beef blood, mineral, assam tea. With air, the aromatic components dissipate a bit and the volatile acidity that initially imparts a fresh pop becomes more dominant. A somewhat trim profile with grippy tannins imparts an austere character and the touch of acetone in the mouth is a good reminder to drink these now.

  • Interesting bottle. Like any oldie, the one in one cellar may differ greatly from one in another, so this is but one experience.

Extraordinarily intense nose. Maple and coffee beans and dried fruit... giving way rather quickly to earth and mushrooms. Given a bit more time... porcini creme brûlée and a faint hint of smoky charred meat, with that dried fruit undercurrent.

On the palate surprisingly flat to start given the intensity of the aroma. But after a half hour or so in a decanter the dried fruit arrives to the tongue... raisin juice, essentially, with some leathery notes.

I kind of loved it, with the caveat that I can understand why most wouldn’t. Fascinating to stick with over the course of a meal, and didn’t lose steam. Didn’t go with the appetizers very well but was a dynamite match with one of the entrées, elk chops with Oaxacan mole.

  • Cork totally moldy. Expectation was lowered but to my surprise a marvelous wine. Decanted for 2 hours. Lots of cedar and cherry. Finish was good and didn’t go flat. Was very satisfied for this age wine. Now I’m going to grill steaks and enjoy the rest of the bottle.

  • Had some trouble with the cork, my Durant saved me again, yes harley, my posh durant is very helpful! :)
mid shoulder, so there is not too much hope for a great surprise,
dark garnet colour, the nose rhubarb, red paprika, some leather,
very, very elegant showing, light as a feather on the midpalate, guess this one has around 12% volume alc., not that convincing, cause nearly rapidly chances with the ox to a more acidic austere showing, a slightly bitter finish, would say this bottle is far off its prime, but great experience, no rating!
With more oxidation getting rapidly tired, a pity!
