  • Really impressed with this wine. Still has nice fruit. Sweet resolved tannin. Layered and complex. Lingering finish. Nice acidity. Nose. Body. All nice.

  • Drinking very nicely. Softened over 20 years and more Bordeaux like.

  • Appearance: deep ruby, garnet highlights, moderate bricking, essentially no staining, medium+ tearing, moderate amount of fine sediment.

Nose: clean, pronounced, developing, red currant, raspberry, ripe strawberry, red apple skin, black currant, black plum, blueberry, eucalyptus, menthol, pencil shavings, gravel, cedar, smoke, coffee grounds, cigar box, red cherry jam, dried sour cherry, red bell pepper jam.

Palate: dry, high acid, medium tannin, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), medium+ body, pronounced intensity, long finish, red currant, raspberry, ripe strawberry, black currant, eucalyptus, menthol, tobacco, gravel, cedar, smoke, cigar box, red cherry jam, dried sour cherry, red bell pepper jam, strawberry fruit leather, baked plum.

Overall: Though it certainly smells and tastes well aged, this wine still has loads of perfumed and candied red fruit notes exploding out of the glass. Also, a very pungent eucalyptus note makes itself known immediately. Some darker fruits and more classic aged Cabernet aromas/flavors (eg. cigar box, cedar) are present as well. The structure at this point is driven by the high acidity, as the tannins have resolved a good amount and the alcohol is a cool 13.5%, which keeps the wine super fresh and dynamic. A very long finish filled with dried and concentrated fruit lingers beautifully. More of an old-school style of California Cabernet, but still shows lots of new world fruit. I think many people would say that this is past its prime, but it's still drinking wonderfully and could probably keep for a few more years, and I tend to enjoy this style of California Cabernet with a lot of age to bring out the more pungent aromatics and focus the acidic drive of the wine. Really really delicious, with or without a food pairing.

  • Surprised at how good this was. Bright ruby color (edges as well), nose is cherries and cigar box. Flavors are soft red fruits with cedar notes and a touch of spice. Well-integrated silky tannins on the long gorgeous finish. Maybe past the absolute peak but drinking beautifully.
