This has developed quite a bit over the last few years. It's not mature yet, but it's getting there and it no longer has the imposing structure that was such a roadblock way back. Instead, it's actually acquired a slender form and the structural lines are finely etched - there's a sense in which this is developing into something almost more Brunello-like than Chianti. It's shed most of the primary fruit and now features the typical sangiovese dried cherry in a somewhat autumnal cast, against a backdrop that's just starting to hint at some mature funk. Another few years should find it in a very interesting spot.

Not as precise as the previous bottle. There was also a touch of oxidation so I'm not totally sure of the bottle (I should know better when I'm buying wine from Astor which have been on the shelf for a year..). Acidity seemed a little disjointed. Might be in awkward phase as well and about to shut down.

In texture, a classic old-school Chianti with rugged tannin and a firm spine - but with a more contemporary depth of fruit and a deep blackish hue. This may be starting to close up a little, as there's not much to the scent except a bit of leatheriness and the structure is certainly fierce.

Finally a Chianti showing a sense of place and drinking like Sangiovese. Typical cherry and earthy notes. Some leather as well. Maybe a touch of VA. Well structured, ripe with great acidity. Bottle is gone in a heartbeat and this has everything to age well.

Typical dusty nose, dried red fruit nose. Supple red fruit, dark cherry, thick dark fruit, musky and velvety.
