Some nice Burgundies (Chicago, IL): A fantastic bottle of Port and far better than any other Nacionals I've had. It poured out easily with very little wastage as all the sediment had actually crusted onto the bottom of the bottle already. The nose is stellar -- perfumed and delicate with some figs and a light caramel note as well. The palate is similarly gorgeous, with a silky texture and tannins that are for all intents and purposes fully resolved. Quite sweet, with a slightly viscous mouthfeel, but plenty of acidity to balance it out. The spirit blends into this wine so well too... easily the best bottle of Port I've ever had.

An exceptional VP and of course a bit of history too. My friend Paulo Verissimo was visiting for my 60th birthday, so I felt that well, if ever there was an excuse! The port was medium ruby in color, with an initial nose of shellac and alcohol that quickly faded and was replaced by a lovely red berry perfume (cranberries or red currents), spice cake, vanilla, white chocolate. As we sipped over the course of a 3 hour afternoon, it never stopped evolving. Sweet yet tart and very cleanly delineated, on the palate the finish seemed endless and endlessly fascinating. A remarkable bottle.

Like pretty much every other ‘Nacional’, looks a fair bit younger than it is. It has flesh, it has fruit and it has beautiful spirit. There’s some cardamom and other spice action and it is sweet, dense and so long.

(Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage Nacional) Medium ruby red color; rich, raspberry, sassafras, black fruit nose; rich, tart black fruit, berry, chocolate, orange palate with depth; long finish (in an awesome place right now)

Wines that Charles loves (Cafe Pyrenees): Generous nose with ripe fruit and sweet toffee notes. Palate has medium body. Sweet yet lifted and persistent.
