Dim Sum Club at Hua Ting (Hua Ting, Orchard Hotel): A very pleasant wine, drinking well now. Served blind, no one had any doubt that this was an Aussie Shiraz-based wine on the nose alone. With its sweet aromas of ripe black fruit and plums, sprinkles of earth and spice, and then a little rubbery gum tree twang, this could hardly have come from anywhere else. On the palate, fine, mellow tannins and well-integrated acidity framed sweet black-fruited flavours of blackcurrants and plum seasoned with anise spice and a toss of dried earth. Finish was decent rather than great, with just a touch of eucalyptus curling away at the end. Nothing special, but this was very pleasant and drinking nicely on the night.
Cork and fill in exc. cond. Aerated in decanter 1 hour (ideal). Served non-blind and enjoyed with a good meal (shout out to Nick's on Second in Long Beach!), and a great friend. My 4th bottle of the 7 purchased years ago, but the first one that has truly delivered upon the potential I'd seen all those years ago. With just 60 minutes in decanter and for the following 2 hours, this full-bodied, dark ruby colored treat displayed lovely composition and artful blending. With the structure to age (gracefully and purposefully), and room to improve, I look forward to enjoying this over the next decade, perhaps beyond. 13,5% abv. very highly recommended, thru 2021
Bottle courtesy of and shared with wine-strategies. Initially showing more earthiness and herb, I never would have guessed this was Australian if tasting blind. With air, ripe berries came through and fully filled the palate with a great roundness to it that was thoroughly in balance. Still has another 5-10 years of life in it. Really a great bottle of wine shared with a great friend.
PnP. Superb aromas of bright berries, anise, herbs, smoked meat and earth. Complex nose, with a palate follows through and delivers an equal amount of sensory overload. The type of balance only a master can muster, the beauty, remarkable. One of those rare creations that offers just as much for lovers of New World-style, as it does for those that prefer Old World-style harmony and purity. Drink thru 2016, 13,5% abv, recommended +
