Matured for 18 months in mostly Hungarian oak (70% new), this rose-to-purple-colored wine smells of blueberry, mulberry, and vanilla. It's medium-to-light bodied and it announces itself on the palate with a blast of brisk, orangey acidity, sweet-tart flavors of pomegranate and mulberry, and a hint of white pepper and minerals. These elements are integrated, yet somehow they sing the same high note; even over three nights of tasting the wine feels one-dimensional rather than complex, and the finish, long as it is, is composed strictly of a thin orange-and-mulberry acidity. Given the wine's acidity and balance, it has the potential to age a few years, but I can't say if it'll get any deeper or more complex.

(Heron Hill Winery Blaufrankisch Finger Lakes) nose it toasty with oak and vanilla notes that somewhat mask the ripe plum, black cherry and spice aromas. Medium bodied with extremely ripe dark fruit and spice flavors, the vanilla/oak still dominates the palate too much for my tastes. The tannins are round and well integrated. The spice peeks through the vanilla nicely. It's a well-made wine, but doesn't fit what I'm looking for stylistically. And I'm not really sure that I'd be able to identify it at Blau if tasted blind.
