Community Tasting Notes (20) Avg Score: 92.2 points

  • Tasted at Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa, FL. Dark cherry and red currant fruit with various sweet accents to them. A plethora of detailed aging notes of sous-bois and dried leaves. Later more dominant tobacco and smoke. Then eucalyptus features and adding leather. Beautifully structured palate with good tension, tannin molten away and good balance. Still with a nice sweetness to the fruit on the palate. Mid-length finish. Amazing versatility and aged to perfection. Of the older Mondavi Reserves I’ve had so far (1973, 1994) this is no doubt the best.

  • From a bottle with a bottom neck fill, this wine had a deep red center and red/orange rims. The medium intensity nose generated currant, mocha, and red soil notes with just a touch of cigar. It had a 95 point nose after 2 hours of air.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with light rounded tannin. It was a touch disjointed for the first hour or two but became more round and integrated with air.

I doubt this lovely wine will get any better so drink ASAP. Close to 95 pts.

  • The color is still a bright red with just a little bricking. The nose is very concentrated with dried herbs, smoke, creosote and cedar. When first tasted it came across a bit sour, but these old Mondavi's really benefit from a decant, so I let it sit for 2 hours before dinner. By then it had evolved showing more dried herbs, chocolate, cassis, coffee and plum. Well balanced, smooth and a paired really well with roast chicken.

  • Here I found an earthy expression with moist soil tones up front, giving way to animal musk, minerals, dried herbs, hints of cedar and stone dust. On the palate, I found a still-lively and vibrant expression with silky textures ushering in tart cherry and strawberry fruits, along with saturating spice and gorgeous inner floral tones. It finished long and spicy with lingering sweet and sour cherry, earth tones and minerals. This is amazingly youthful for its age and drinking beautifully--Wow!

  • From a nice looking bottle with a vhs fill, this wine had a deep red center and orange rims. The medium intensity nose showed black currants, red dust soil, anise, and plums.

In the mouth, this wine was gorgeously integrated with ripe fruit, rounded tannin, solid acidity, and good length.

This wine was not obviously Californian nor did it taste French (or any other country for that matter). This was a first rate example of what California can do. Impressive and close to 95 points but at peak.
