Dark red. Beautiful and harmonious cherry liqueur, earth, tobacco. Tannins present but so fine that they did not impede the silky smoothness of this wine. This is drinking so nice right now, but still has years ahead. Excellent.
Ristorante Bovio, La Morra: But there was a big step up in quality with the Monprivato ... Deep but radiant ruby colour. An exquisite, multi-layered nose of red cherry liqueur, subtle five spices, dry underbrush, tobacco leaf and cooked meat juices. A lovely bouquet! On the palate, after a relatively sweet entry, there were layers of red berry fruit, cooked smokey meats, red liquorice and high cocoa chocolate. In fact, in some ways, the wine seemed more primary than the Azelia. Viscous and velvety in the mouth, the wine had serious fruit weight and dry extract. There were big tannins but they were fine grained and well integrated. Elegant and refined. The Monprivato paired beautifully with my duck cannelloni. The wine finished long, dry and savoury. I got the impression it was just reaching its drinking plateau now ... Excellent!
This is extraordinary. Just opening the bottle has a bouquet of ripe nebbiolo wafting out. The actual nose is one of the great noses of barolo -- huge dark tarry and earthy notes, with a background of violets and an aftermath of cedar. Palate is dense, chewy, ripe fruit with bittersweet chocolate underneath. This develops into a long building up of a tannic aftermath that just keeps on going and slowly dissolves, leaving my mouth sated, happy, thrilled. (Note: this bottle actually has "Monprivato" on it, so not sure if this wine is categorized correctly in my cellar.
Slow O for 7hrs. Nose was fantastic with notes of leather, meat and cranberry. On the palate, very nice structure with cherry and light mushroom hints. Long Barolo finish. Wish I had more than 1 bottle left
#8070 Way more menthol and mint notes than I've ever had in a Monprivato. Fairly dominating and distracting really. Gritty, tannic structure. This is just an odd bottle and is from a different planet than the last two bottles of '95 I've had.
