Incredibly youthful, but also quite giving in its own way. The nose draws you in with white peach and citrus, and notes of flint, fennel tops and seaspray. The palate is full, layered and so deep and precise. It has awesome presence and a finish that is focussed and oozes minerality. Wonderful length.

Chablis Tasting at a collector's home (San Mateo, CA): Decanted for 3 hours, served blind in a flight of 08/12 Les Clos, Wine E. My 1st rank, groups 1st rank. Pale yellow. This is a Raveneau nose, waxy, some funk, sea breeze, iodine, lemon and sage spice. Slightly exotic, with a rich deep palate that is a touch ripe but oozes juicy fruit on the long chalky finish.

A mighty performance by this great vintage for Clos. Started off painfully mineral with typical Chablis crushed oyster shell. Decanted in a wide decanter and served in Zalto Burg once it drew enough air it gained noticeably in stature, depth and blossomed into a remarkably ample wine with salinity but also waxiness. Terrific and there is probably the potential to add 1-2 points in 5 - 10 years which is when this should really be at its apax. Of the Clos I had I think this is second only to the 2010 and a touch ahead of 2012, but while the 2010 is already near proper prime the 08 might have time on its side…

Raveneau Grand Cru with Maxime Raveneau (110 Taillevent London): During Raveneau dinner with Maxime Raveneau sampling all three GCs 12/10/08/05 at 110 Taillevent London. No formal notes taken. This wine has come a long way since I last had it 3 years ago (when it was painfully tight for my taste), now it has opened up and is the real deal - for me marginally better than the also great Blanchot, and probably my 2nd WOTN if I had to pick (after Clos 10). Very impressive stuff indeed!
