  • this wine was singing from the beginning, ready in the glas, cristal clear aromas from scratch, deeply layered and complex, some typical barolo aromas such as clear and laser sharp red fruits, some iodine, some cherry and some red johannisbeere, some floral hints. so nice to sniff. never gets boring.
this showed sooo young, but is the top quality that shines through. no signs of age. this is ridiculously good.
elegant and fresh, with some time in the glass some herbs joined the party as well.

aromas still changing and evolving. soooo nice.

on the palate holds on forever and again the clear red fruit is shining trough. holding long and elegant, fresh, clean, precise, deep and complex, almost every adjective that a good quality and traditional barolo wants to have.
high acidity and super nice drink flow. tannins still intact.
can still be stored and will also get better with some time.

  • From a bottle that is immaculate. Pristine label, good fill and a cork that is only soaked about a third of the way down. This pours light ruby in the glass with light bricking. Amazing color considering the age, reinforcing the immaculate bottle. The nose is reserved and youthful on first pour, showing a bit of an unexpected dominant menthol note. Over time in the decanter it really opens up and is at its best after an hour and beyond. Aromas are of red cherry, orange peel, lemon peel, lightly decaying cedar, forest floor, whisps of spice, sandalwood, touches of menthol, a touch of beef stock, decaying rose petals, and potpourri. Aromatically very complex, captivating and if anything a tad more youthful than expected. The palate retains nebbiolo structure. While the tannin has been sanded down a tad, it's still fairly aggressive in the mouth. Medium plus tannin, medium acid. The finish does have some astringency but also replays the citrus, red fruit, and cedar of the nose. Very lovely wine that really came around nicely and needed air to show its best.

  • Complex aromatics with notes of tobacco, dark cherry and licorice. Powerful and dense but not heavy. Substantial, fine tannin structure. A fantastic and classic Monprivato that is still youthful. Could have benefited from more air than we gave it. 97+

  • Saturday lunch gathering (Bethesda, Maryland): Expressive nose displaying very ripe concentrated black fruit with a hint of red, black cherry, blackberry pie, dry cherry, fruitcake, licorice, rose, iron, balsamico, dark spices and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated red and black fruit, rich and unctuous, bright acidity, earthy mineral, still showing noticeable tannins and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with licorice and lather at the end. This remains very youthful and can improve for another decade or two as there is so much fruit.

(Giuseppe Mascarello Monprivato) Ahhh . . . another '89. Volcanic nose of sheer ridiculousness. Sweet peppers, black cherries, flowers, minerals, wet tar. Super aromas. Awesome concentration on the palate. Definetly one of the densest wines of the day. Incredibly complexity and ripeness. Not even close to over the top. Astounding length. Profound wine
