From a vintage described by Michael Broadbent as "eminently forgettable" comes a village wine that is quite good. Bottle, color and fill were excellent, the cork moldy, soaked to the top and stuck to the capsule with plenty of corrosion. A vigorous wine with plenty of muscle if not elegance. Earthy, sous bois, smokey and properly constructed. Not the most complex old burg, but a very nice surprise.

Far from over the hill - in fact, it's in pretty good shape. Dark garnet robe with some bricking, big bouquet of mushrooms, berries and oak. The first couple of sips were pretty lean and austere (to be expected, given the wine's age) but in a matter of minutes it really opened up and gave up its fruit and terroir. Not a whole lot of complexity (a characteristic of the vintage, not the age of the wine) but very pleasurable and satisfying. Glad I bought this, and richer for the experience.

Dark color, weedy, slightly tired dark berry fruit. With some time it really surprises, fruit seems to perk up, there's some smoke and tar. I'd actually never peg this as Burgundy blind. But a pretty decent mature wine, meaty. B

Astonishingly youthful, with almost no fading of color at the edges, and no fading of the wine in the glass even after a couple of hours. Very soft, elegant, balanced. Loved by everyone in the group, this was a surprising treat. Not profound but definitely pleasant, and punching way above its weight class.

Not anywhere near dead, in fact, just in solid tertiaries and a lot of fun. This sat not too far behind the Marechal and Boillot for wines I'd like to just sit down with, think about, and enjoy. Shroomy earthy dead leafy ashy stuff, but no madierization or anything like that. We kind of rolled over this bottle but I thought it had a lot going for it. Not more than it was, just nicely what it was. What were you doing in 73?

(Bouchard Père et Fils Pommard) Very light bricked red color with clear meniscus; funky, bottle stink nose, with perhaps a TCA note; light bodied, tart strawberry, mineral, mushroom palate with grip and no discernable TCA on palate; medium finish 91+ pts.
