  • Still very serious with a hint of cherry, dark fruit, leather, and tobacco. Crazy how a second wine can be lively after almost 30 years, but LLC is indeed immortal. Straightforward, not complicated, fruity driven, and silky with perfectly integrated tannins. Just wow. Splash decant is all it needs. Drink now.

  • Decanted 90 and enjoyed over the next hour. Still not fully open for business but dark fruit and decent secondaries make this a wine that can be drunk now - better with food as a bit austere. Fruit seems like it will hold for a while so maybe this gets a bit better with age but enjoyable with a decant and with food now. B+/A-

  • Decanted 2 hrs. Oct. 8, 2023 and served with veal chop & porcini mushrooms: cork still intact; still youthful, energetic with a lively nose, great complexity and depth with a panoply of flavors mid-palate, and long finish with a hint of spice. Perfect food pairing. Really an outstanding wine in all ways and easily surpassed a 1995 Leoville Las Cases drunk 2 years ago. Day 2: served with Steak Diane (milder version of steak au poivre) and still going strong.

  • Badly corked and impossible to assess. Interesting that the previous bottle I had not that long ago was like a blank slate, with virtually nothing of interest, almost flavorless. That impression can come from minute amounts of cork (TCA) that are really hard to detect or below detection. I am only moderately sensitive to detecting TCA so that may explain how insipid the previous bottle was.

  • Gorgeous mature Saint Julien with plenty of time left at its apex. Not tired. Balanced and classic with graphite, smoke, poturri, leather, tobacco, cherry and black currant fruit, and organic soil. There is a deft freshness and the wine still posseses tension and energy. Lovely integration, nice balance between fruit and acid. A real buy at a fair price.

(Clos du Marquis) Dark garnet color; intriguing savory black fruit and beefy nose; structured tart red fruit, cherry palate with menthol notes and depth, noticeable Petit Verdot; medium-plus finish 92+ pts. (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot)

Rockss and Fruit

(Clos du Marquis) Classic nose of cedar, red currants, tar, mint and earth. Aromatic and perfumey. Waves of currant and cherry with ripe, chewy tannins and nice acidity that keeps the fruit flowing on the finish. Very pure and with utmost elegance. Drinking well now but go 8-15 years more. A beauty.
