Opened bottle 5 hours before drinking; deep dark colored, somewhat viscous and port-like in the glass. On the nose: dark fruit, some chocolate and cherries. Taste: a little sweet, berries and wood. Aftertaste with a small bitter. Combined very well with the pork tenderloin teriyaki.

Decanted for just under an hour before tasting. Dark ruby core, pink rim. On the nose; candied dark cherries, dried fruit, vanilla, honey and a touch of sweet pipe tobacco. On the palate; sweet and viscous – sweet dried fruit on the initial attack, fades on the mid palate and finishes off with a little bitterness and noticeable alcoholic heat. This wine sadly confirmed my stereotypical view of Amarone as sweet, alcoholic and lacking grip. There are obviously better exponents around, but I’m afraid I won’t invest too much time trying to find them.
