Open an hour+ before tasting. Mature red fruit with plenty of earth and woodsy spice on nose comes across as surprisingly mature. Similar flavors are fresher and brighter, with an old vine concentration, but not quite the complexity I once hoped for. While very good tonight, I remember opening a bottle in 2010 (shortly after release) and recall enjoying it more, certainly thinking it had even greater promise.

Decanted, started opening up for dinner after an hour or so. Perfect with steak and oven baked vegetables. Too bad the bottle was finished when the meal was done, last sips were the best. Really looking forward to the magnum of the same vintage.

Was looking forward to this somewhat aged prephyllox Sicily red (also to confirm the general reputation for not being age worthy). Oak influence is very present and to my taste it has plateaued and the acidic note at the back palate suggests it will only will go downhill from now. It was nice but I struggled to find something that stood out from the crowd.

Tenuta delle Terre Nere (CAVE SA, Switzerland): Fine nose of pot pourri (rose in particular), very Barolo in a sense. Massive concentration, wonderful balance. Lots of everything (alcohol, tannins, aromas, body, acidity) everywhere. This is the 2nd vintage of that wine whose name come from the man who sold the vineyard to Marco de Grazia. These are 140 yr-old vines, ungrafted.

BYO (Michaels place): Absolutely stunning. Crazy intense and an amazing depth packed with juicy cherry fruit. Simply a beautiful wine. 96-97p
