A Night of Aged California Zins (Dino's Grotto - Washington, DC): Pepper and plums on the nose. Fresh, zesty, dusty tannins. Seems to show quite a bit of life left here with red plums and raspberries, and notes of pepper, soy and leaves. Impressive complexity on this refined, aged wine.

Fading. I got a little dusty flavor, a modicum of fruit, but nice texture. A bit too much earth for my tastes, yet it retained some complexity and elegance. Not bad.

Over the hill. Not madeirized but little fruit left, nose and palate dominated by dusty wood, like cedar but not quite, and drying through midpalate and finish.

Okay, I have to admit, this is the first aged Zinfandel that I have liked. Really fine, with loads of raspberries and minerals. Some bricking at the rim. The texture is like parchment: at once smooth but yet the tannins leave an impression like the feel of animal skin from the still-present tannin. Some tar and leather are there as well. Elegant (beyond the tannin). A new personal appreciation for Zinfandel.

ORANGE ON THE EDGE, CHERRIES AND CHOCOLATE IN THE NOSE TURNED INTO BERRIES AND SPICE. FLAVOR LIKE THE NOSE. MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH.
