Tar, black earth, light black pepper, and a hint of oak on the nose. Spices appear after more exposure with white pepper predominant. On the palate cherry, raspberry, tobacco, light earth. Still reasonably strong acid. Opens as approachable yet firm but quickly softened over the course of two hours. A solid wine when one encounters a good bottle, this one still had more time ahead of it.
Really a gorgeous Unico but may need more time. Full-bodied with great clarity and detail showing a gorgeous flavor profile of dates, carob and smoky dark fruits. Good strong acidity buffers the decadent flavors and keeps the wine lean for now and the finish is elegance with finely complex notes of tapinade, wet fur and minerals. Liked this and it should still improve. 93+
allowed four hours bottle breath at bottom shoulder level; hallow and high acidity initially; at its peak at around 3 hours after serving; rounded and balanced bouquet and palate; concentrated berries and black currants at its' peak; cidar, leather, subtle spices to balance the fruits; good structure but lack the depth; quite short in finish
8th Annual Blind Challenge (The Square, Mayfair, London): Sweet, ripe, lifted, minty, alcoholic, high acid, grippy tannin, whiffs of oxidation - this was surely new world. Amazed that this was Unico as it had none of that dried cherry character that they all seemed to have at Linden's big vertical
