Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.9 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 19 notes)

Tasted by pocchia on 8/30/2010 & rated 88 points: This amarone is a great price point - $17 at Trader Joe's. Deep red/purple in the glass, lightly perfumed dried berries and just slight heat on the nose, medium bodied, dry and fruity in your mouth. Pop and pour, but even better with some time and served slightly chilled. Stems up! (62 views)

Tasted by toontune on 8/5/2010 & rated 86 points: Full bodied, huge fruit with typical Amarone subtle bitterness and mega tannins. Lacking better quality Amarone's complexities. Still, for price, performs admirably.
The wine looks Ruby colored.
The legs are Slow.
It smells like Raisin, and Medicinal.
It tastes like Raspberry, and Raisin.
The body is Full.
The wine is textured Coarse.
The wine finishes Long. (359 views)
Tasted by pocchia on 7/3/2010 & rated 88 points: We tried awhile ago & thought it needed more time. Brick color in the glass, strong fruit on the nose, and soft, sweet fruit on the palate. Does Trader Joe's have more? Stems up! (569 views)

Tasted by matwel on 5/3/2010 & rated 84 points: Overly sweet dried cherries, dark berries, jimmy. (915 views)
Tasted by JCarella on 3/11/2010 & rated 84 points: I agree with the other reviews. Open this wine 2 hour prior to drinking. It a good wine for the price however it does not pack that Amarone punch. Can be forgetable (1326 views)
Tasted by TomATL on 3/10/2010 & rated 87 points: Quite a bit of raisin/port and strawberry jam aromas in this one. Enjoyable, but different. (1324 views)
Tasted by JavaZin on 3/4/2010 & rated 90 points: Starts with a nose that changes from fresh strawberries to mushroom and earth, and then dark cherry. Good taste of black cherry, perhaps some blackberry. Medium finish. Fantastic with red sauce and linguine. Wish I had bought a case at this price. (1376 views)

Tasted by gripNsip on 12/20/2009 & rated 90 points: Blind Amarones at David's place; 12/19/2009-12/20/2009: Nose: Very floral, roses and red berries. Very un-amarone-like. Almost Pinot Noir like on the nose, red fruit with some funk. Palate: Lots of structure, sweet tannins, strong acidity. Red fruit, very fresh. Strawberry yogurt. Almost no dried characteristics, maybe some dried cranberry but not much else. Very red fruit with some red apple. Starts out intense, slightly hollow in places of the mid-palate, short finish compared to the rest. Still delicious, I really enjoy it overall. (2300 views)
Tasted by dbp on 12/19/2009 & rated 88 points: Amarone (Blind) (My House): Decanted for three hours. Light, pretty, soft nose. Totally different than the others. Very soft, almost like cranberry sauce, strawberry glaze, red apple, graphite, and light cracked pepper. Mid-palate is rich, but fairly light in texture, with plenty of tart candied berry fruit building. Very fresh, without much resemblance to Amarone body. Finish is very bright berry fruit, nice acid, and quite a bit lighter than what I usually seek in an Amarone. However, this is very tasty. Everyone agreed this didn't feel much at all like an Amarone, but everyone also liked it. 88+ (2280 views)
Tasted by ggk on 11/15/2009 & rated 84 points: off-dry, smooth and medium bodied with dried fruit/raisin taste. (2518 views)
Tasted by hankj on 11/5/2009 & rated 84 points: Amarone through and through. It is very soft, full, raisiny, and pretty much one dimentsional. Hides its alcohol pretty well. The general quality is definitely lower than most Amarones.

With due respect to the previous taster's opinion, this wine is nothing like a Rhone wine. It could pass for a Ripaso, and I think I might buy an equally priced Ripaso over it next time around. (2663 views)
Tasted by dbp on 10/4/2009 & rated 88 points: For a few years now this has offered me the first glimpse into the new Amarone vintage, and like 2004, I'm eager to try out the 2006s. I quickly drank one glass and enjoyed it. I'm not sure I'm believing the 14.5% printed on the label (every year it has said that) as I had a pretty significant buzz going after that one glass. A few hours rest, and I came back to a full glass after it was open for two hours. The nose has blossomed a bit from how tight it was at first, now showing cherry & plum sauce, graphite, rubbing alcohol, and rubber cement covering a rubber ball. The alcohol is definitely coming through. Mid-palate is quite rich and tasty, showing deep candied cherries, red apples, and some graphite. Body is medium, and not quite the usual thick, creamy Amarone feel, but certainly not thin. Finish follows through with light rasins, figs, plums, and cherries. Very tasty. This is the best Bregonzo Amarone yet, though honestly it doesn't really taste much like an Amarone. Blind, I'd likely guess a recent Chateauneuf-du-Pape that was heavy on the Syrah. It's particularly this way on the palate. Strange. There is a little alcohol zing on the finish as well, but overall it's just a delicious wine that could become dangerous as it's quite easy to drink. (2848 views)
