We drank the '05 followed by the '08. The 2005 was singing -- white and yellow orchard fruit, layered and complex and a bit feminine. By contrast, the 2008 was drinking big -- similar fruit profile but concentrated and brimming with tannin and extract with a honeysuckle note as well. I think I preferred the '08 this evening based on its full-throttled power. The 2004 was opened first but was premoxed.
Andrew and Howard's birthday dinner: There was some typical Henri Boillot reduction on nose with an overlay of pear, peach, wet gravel and white flowers. Powerful, driven and rich on the palate but with good precision and acidity (reflecting the vintage). A complex, non-linear flavour profile of stone fruit, citrus and wet river boulders with a hint of chalk. I was at first in Corton then in Puligny. Close to Grand Cru quality. Very good. Years ahead of it.
