Soft, smooth and delicious fruit without much complexity. Very appreciated. Some alcohol burn but nice wine. Overdelivery on price point after 8 years in the cellar.

The mourvedre was dominant in this bottle, lots of tree bark notes on nose and palate, black pepper comes in on the finish with a very dark and savory profile. People who want sweet fruit might not like this, but I found it very interesting.

Shiraz with darker notes added from the mourvèdre. A bit of smoke, blackberries and blueberries, spices. Quite interesting but lacks the finesse and smoothness to score higher. Will probably last several years more.

Head 2 head against Rufus Stone 2009 Heathcote Shiraz (follow head2headwine on twitter to see the play-by-play) The Penfolds wins mainly due to price point. Both are enjoyable wines, but why pay more for the Rufus when you can enjoy the Penfolds. I'd purchase the Penfolds again.

Dark. I got youthful, forward, slightly jammy blackberry mixed with concord grape. I looked for spice but didn't find it. It was ripe and balanced in the mouth with an enjoyable, lingering finish. Overall, forward, good wine, basic fruit. Now or wait a few years.
