Good wine friends; random wines (@ JK): Caramel, butterscotch and some petrol in the bouquet. Same impressions on the palate. Some butter candy, polishing wax and sweetness. Very ripe and mature. A bit too old? No score.

Caramel and butterscotch prevail upon opening. And residual sugar makes this slightly flabby. Lacking freshness, Riesling typicity and vineyard characteristics at the moment. 86/100 After a few hours the wine is finding its way and its balance. Even more so on the next day, it's becoming less heavyhanded. Peach, apricot, some citrus appears. So, much better on day 2. Strange, huh...?

Impromptu tasting @ Peter Z. (Belgium): Breathtaking glass of wine. The sweetness is integrated very well. Spicy complexity of cinnamon, lavender, cardamom. But also lovely hints of caramel, nougat, nuts and apricot. Highly concentrated and very drinkable. Wow.

Wow, now that is a wine! It opened with an intense, dominating petrol nose that eased up and spread out with air to reveal a beautiful wine with great depth and complexity. It showed a bit sweeter than I was expecting, a touch and a half off dry. The color is light gold. I would expect this to improve for a very long time, but it's very good now.

(Van Volxem Scharzhofberger "Pergentsknopp") This was easily the wine of the night and makes me happy to have many 2001 German Rieslings in my cellar. I won't even go into detail all the complexity on the nose and I'll just say nuanced was an understatement. Amazing nose with spice, ginger, red fruits, green apple, etc, bla, blah, blah. It changed every sniff and changed every sip. At one point it was rich and dense, another point lithe like a ballerina, another point it had crunchy minerality, and I am not sure where it went as it was finished before I could say Scharzhofberger Pergentsknopp. One of the greatest bottles of Riesling I have ever had.

A very rich Spatlese. Probably could have used a couple more years, but still enjoyable.
