  • Color of honey. initially a funky, musty nose, with a bit of stewed fruits. That blew off after about 30 minutes. What emerged was a perfumed, honeyed nose with gardenias and a bit of the ocean. The initial tastes were a touch stewed and a bit thin with a short finish. Nice acid backbone that was a clean counterpoint to the pate a fruit. Some green apple and mango. Yellow plums, green grapes, lemon grass. This was a wonderful surprise. At first we thought it was a faded lady, but it gained weight and complexity over the course of 2 hours.

  • 1979 E. Guigal Hermitage Blanc – This wine had a wonderful golden color, and a honeyed fragrance that reminded me of the way an aged D’Yquem tastes; however, once we took our first sip it became evident that this old lady looked much better from afar than up close; it was fully oxidized.
