  • Pinot Fisticuffs (Homestead): This was obviously young when opening, even with it coming from a half bottle (375 ml). It took hours to come around, moving from reticent and tight aromatics, sour and tart fruit with little obvious minerals above more hidden acid to an obvious gem in the making. By the time the last drops were about to make their mark, my counterpart (a picky one) was having no problem noting the beauty of this great year, great producer and great vineyard. Strange how it started so animal. Not brett, but close. Finally it was a great mix of bright red cherry combined with a cranberry tartness, red and black flowers and licorice. More and more kept coming. The shocker was the structure that switched from bulbous, sweet ripe fruit to totally in-check balance. In half bottles this needs another three to five years. Drink after 2017 - 2020 (approx) for 750 ml bottles.
