  • 1998 Burgundy horizontal (Noize): I guess this was pretty much as expected: bare, dry, woody and leathery, giving a 'masculine' feel. That said, there was also a finer, brighter, more mineral edge, although not really any fruit. Long finish that tasted like an Old Fashioned made with a particularly oaky Bourbon such as Woodford Reserve; that's a cocktail I enjoy, but I found the note distracting here. Solid, interesting wine, and good with the food, but glad I didn't have the bottle to myself.

  • Dark colour to the rim. Very savoury and meaty/animale in a classic gevrey way. Surprisingly supple palate for Faiveleys of this era although with quite a dry finish. About as civilised as old school GC faiveley gets!

  • 1998 Burgundy (Noizé, London): Denser, more ruby than garnet. A big step up in texture and density, and that’s just the nose. A tad leaner on the palate but a good thwack of dry tannin. Really lush, five star nos but pulls up shorter on the palate. A touch of mint on the finish. ****

  • First time with this in more than 8 years. I recall the prior bottle having more fruit and power (duh!). The red fruit is of the dried variety now and there is a pronounced tobacco leaf scent. Maybe not quite as obviously Grand Cru as the last bottle but this was impressive and enjoyable.

  • Quarantine; 3/12/2020-5/29/2020 (Chicago, IL): Virtual tasting with Erwan. Initially, this was a little dirty and my sense was this was a pretty meh older wine. This really picked itself up after just half an hour in the glass. It cleaned up, and you get a very generous amount of sweet (and somewhat dried) fruit on the nose. It is exuberant, with an almost glossy sheen of fruit layered over some serious earthy structure. Large-scaled, with obvious grand cru concentration and depth. As part of a project to build up a library at Faiveley, Erwan mentioned they had gone through all the tasting notes, and the Mazis was one of their top wines that vintage (alongside the Clos des Cortons Faiveley and Musigny).
