Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • An amazingly fresh, beautiful bottle of wine, a classic expression of Loibenberg. Given Knoll's track record, I was not surprised at how well this aged but if tasting blind I would have been astounded to learn it was 25 years old. It had a vibrant, light golden sun color, but the star here was the lovely, floral bouquet, very elegant and clear. This is how I imagine it would be walking in spring through the apricot trees in blossom in the Wachau. The palate was light-bodied and high-toned, with lemon, grapefruit and mineral notes. Just lovely.

Thinking about the historic context, this was bottled in the wake of the 1985 glycol scandal involving some bulk producers but that reportedly had a broad effect on Austrian exports. Even in the Wachau, the Vinea Wachau group had just started.
