WOW! What a way to end the year - with one of Charles Smith's legendary Syrahs and a great steak. This is a blend of 50% Skull & 50% Heart. Decanted for 30 minutes - with lots of sediment - but more decanter time would be better. Deep dark inky purple in the glass. Heavy dark fruit aromas. A full-bodied, full-on mouthful of every dark flavored fruit you can name, along with lots of spice, some cocoa, and some earth. The acidity tries but falls just short of balancing all these flavors, while all tannins and oak are well integrated, and there is no hint of the 16% abv. Will certainly hold but I don't think it will improve so enjoy these in the short term with a good decant to let it come alive.

This is sludge imo. Could have been a flawed bottle, but didn't taste like it. Way too much alcohol and that drowns out some hint of maybe mint and olives. Drank with a 2004 Guigal La Turque (ya know, compare new and old world syrah!). What a mistake. It made the La Turque taste like water.

Black. Meaty, olives, light funk. Dark fruit, soy, mineral. Tannins + wood fully integrated. Big finish. Little in your face but without the heat. Drink

Comfortable and laid back at this age, but exudes strong scents of black currant jam and a warming grill. Wood smoke and dark fruit surround a core of cherry and strawberry juice. Fruit, black coffee tannins and acids are perfectly knitted together.
