  • 4th of 6, decanted 15 minutes, perfect level, cork quarter stained, as last Jan's bottle though tannins on exit seemed better integrated, as ever fine line and length and a relative ease of fruit expression unusual in Italian wine, plateau which compared with French tend to be more brittle/4 square, 10 years. F+ (18).

  • 3rd of 6, decanted 15 minutes, perfect cork and level, back on form of my 15 bottle if with more volume to the fruit, beguiling and complex flavours, youthful robe still, only caution is drying tannins on exit particularly in last glass (as if fruit intensity fading v tannins), upside maybe, needs watching. F+ (18).

  • Wow... Excellent super tuscan from this great house. Cabernet blend. 1998 not the best year in Tuscany and than being able to produce such a wine, which is not even over its peak. Two hours decant. Garnet with very little browning. Dark fruit in the nose. So we'll balanced after all these years. 94 points

  • Castello dei Rampolla’s Alceo and Sammarco are in my eyes among the best and most consistent Super Tuscans. Slow ox’ed for 30 min and drank with pizza at home. Still a dark garnet with no browning whatsoever. A subtle nose of dark fruit with some wood spices and good freshness, no signs of oxidization, on the palate this is round, one can see the richness of the Shiraz this still had in early years, nicely balanced and resolved, a bit thick but again the typical acidity of Tuscany, tannins almost entirely integrated. Medium (+) length. No reason to wait but will certainly hold up for another 5 years or so

Rockss and Fruit

(Castello dei Rampolla "Vigna d'Alceo") Reminds the most of Bordeaux of any other of the Cabernet based Super Tuscans. Maybe it has something to do with the Petit Verdot. But it's Tuscan personality is there in spades. Big pure nose of cassis and violets with some spicey oak. Great density on the palate and super-structure. Palate-soaking fruit.

(Castello dei Rampolla "Vigna d'Alceo") Stunning nose out of the gates. Leather, floral, sandalwood, dried cherries. Amazingly aromatic. The nose continues to gain fullness and complexity through aeration. Tuscan terroir shining through on the nose. A gaminess also appears. Thick and lightly viscous in texture. Silky sand-like tannins. Unbelievable in the mouth. Fiercely concentrated but so supple in texture. Incredibly long detailed finish. A rush of fruit concentrate just clamps down and soaks your palate. Tannins are there but so ripe. This is amazing juice. This also retains that elegant restraint that only top wines show.
