  • Decanted 1 hour ahead, cork self-destructed, Durand to the rescue. Big nose of lime, ripe apricot. Big palate with more of a herbal element. Acids hanging in but faded, overall impression this is a touch out of balance but still a great wine. Will put last bottle on the "drink soon" shelf.

  • Opened the bottle 1h before the first glass. In direct comparison with IDIG 2004 and 2005. Straw yellow. No intense bouquet, but no sign of petrol or matured wine. Nice on the palate but not impressive, potentially too old.

  • Drank beside some other 07 Riesling. This one was Close to his drinking Optimum. All the nice signs of a well aged Riesling. Balnaced, juicy and with refreshing acidity. The late palate was not that lean as the mid. 92

  • Cork crumbled but somehow managed to get it out. Taste blind. Drank over 2 hour lunch at Meii Sushi.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, yellow gold colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of saline and stony minerality, honey, hazelnuts, pineapple, and on hindsight, a hint of petroleum. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of stony minerality, honey, hazelnuts, pineapple, caramelised peach, lemon peel, green lime. Long finish.
Very good quality. Wow such a complex aged white wine. Somewhat like an aged oaked Chardonnay with its honey and nutty notes. But the high acidity and aromatic nose somehow not really in line with the mould of a Chardonnay.
The beauty of aged Riesling. Honey and nuts despite no oak influence. Good stuff. Time to drink up and enjoy.

  • Aromas of ripe apricote, candied oranges, then developed into hazelnuts, caramel and coffee. Full-bodied with creamy texture and quite high acidity. Low flavour concentration is a bit disappointing.

(Weingut A. Christmann Königsbacher Idig Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Pfalz, Germany) The Gross Gewach of Idig is located just below the village of Königsbach in the heart of the Pfalz region. Idig is a near-Alleinbesitz (monopole) of proprietor Steffen Christmann, who lovingly farms his majority share of the vineyard using Biodynamic techniques. Mineral aromas from the soil’s loamy mix of loess, chalk, and sandstone scream from the glass, followed by flavors of apple pastry, kaffir lime leaf, ginger, and lemongrass. The 2007’s laser-like acidity is beautifully balanced by a rich texture, even though the wine is bone-dry. Sommelier's Choice: Top Releases of 2009
