  • Past it's prime. Mostly tertiary notes with very little fruit left. Forest floor, truffles, oak.

  • Starting to be a bit overdone and losing some of the complexity and spice, but still a nice wine for the price.

  • Decanted 30 minutes before pairing with a BBQ pulled pork dinner with all the fixins. An opaque purple initially, this was quite severe, with brisk and very dry blackberry, graphite, oak spice and alcohol. Subsequently stored in the shuttered decanter for 24 hours and retried the next evening. Now a brilliant ruby in the glass, opaque in the center stretching out to thinning edges, with a nose of black cherry, dark plum, blackberry, black currant, and a touch of vanilla. Now nicely juicy on the palate, with a tobacco- and blood iron-tinged finish amidst very good intensity and concentration. This was definitely improved with the much longer time spent in the decanter.

  • Popped and poured; consumed over 24 hour period. It's been a year and a half since I last visited this wine and, at least initially, I do not appreciate it's current demeanor. Right out of the gate, it seemed flabby and almost cloying...like it was trying too hard. Previously, this wine did a much better job hiding the 15%+ alcohol...not so much right now. I could only manage a glass and then I had to press the cork back in and revisit the next day, hoping for the best. 24 hours later, this was a much more enjoyable wine. No longer cloying and the alcohol has integrated better. It's still not as complex as it seemed 18 months ago (less of the bacon and leather...if at all) but it's an enjoyable wine none-the-less. A lot of ripe fruit present. I would recommend a healthy decant at this stage of the wine's evolution, just to coax out the unpleasantness. At least keep it in mind.

  • A very good Syrah, a touch lighter than most. More red fruit than black.
