  • From memory: What a surprise – I had more or less written this wine off, but yesterday’s bottle was really enjoyable. Has shed lots of oak and tannins over the last couple of years resulting in greatly improved balance. The fruit is now finally in the forefront, and one can detect emerging tertiary notes of damp forest floor, leather and tobacco. Perhaps lacking the potential to become truly great, but it certainly hammers home the message that one shouldn’t be too quick to judge a wine with a 20+ year life expectancy (90-91 points).

  • From memory: Close to four years since my last bottle, but time really hasn’t done this wine any favours. Modern in style – dark, extracted and heavily oaked. Notes of vanilla and charred wood make it hard to pin this down as a Nebbiolo. Still very structured, but more cellar time will most likely only further obscure what little varietal typicity there is. Four more years down the line I suspect you’re left with just oak and faint traces of generic red fruit. Drink up!

  • I had a sneaking suspicion this would be way too early, but curiosity got the better of me – I have four bottles and haven’t seen any notes. Four hours in a broad based decanter helped, but this wine is still a baby. Medium garnet core, slightly lighter rim. Tight nose, but displays some nice sour cherries, rose petals and vanilla. The palate is more or less dominated by hefty tannins, although some fruit is detectable in the background after hours of air exposure. It’s hard to judge how this wine will turn out, but there’s definitely potential – 88 today, 90+ in five years’ time? If you’re drinking this today a long decant and heavy food with high fat content is recommended. My remaining three bottles will however remain cellared for the foreseeable future.
