  • Tasted double blind. This was one of the better aged Barolos I’ve had in the past two years. I’ve had a couple of 20-35 year old Nebbiolos which were still not soft and round or other which had a mellowed structure but not enough fruit left. This wine hits all the right notes with an inviting softness but with good tension, complex aromatics with a sweet fruit core. Despite only 13.5% ABV there was a bit of heat on the nose (but not the palate). Other than that, this is a fabulous wine.

TN: Intense, concentrated nose with lots of fresh herbs, leather, meaty notes and just a tad of heat. On the palate at first a bit of dried fruit, rasiny aromas which I don’t like. With a bit of air that all blew of and underneath was a very complex wine with precise aromas of mountain herbs, mint, rosmary, meaty notes around a core of red berries. Super soft structure with mellowed tannins, a well-rounded acidity which provides perfect lift and tension. A creamy texture and a superb balance. Good length with a herbal and sweet red fruit driven finish.

Decanting: Decanted for 5+ hours and still it needed more time in the glass to blossom into the fantastic wine it was in the end.

  • This was the first ever vintage produced by Chiara Boschis and therefore the first ever Barolo produced by a woman – can't make a wine more feminist than that. There is peppery spiciness, savoury notes, tobacco and char coal, ripe red cherry and some brighter strawberry bruit. This continued to add layers of complexity with aging aromas are fabulously balanced by an intense fruit. If you know what you’re looking for you’ll find rose water scents. The palate is a show stopper. Fleshy and rich, full of dried tobacco leaves, leather and a raisin-like fruit, fresh acidity and a long, flavoured finish. But in order to get there, this needed every second of the 5h decant.
