  • Lovely intense fresh fruit coupled to reference-quality earthiness. Lovely combination of ripe and fresh.

  • Interesting contrast to the 2011 Sans Soufre. Fairly deep ruby color for a poulsard, the nose is ripe berries with a little sweat, the palate is centered on strawberry while the edges are more towards stone fruit. The finish is medium with light tannins and lots of rocks. Lots of flavor in a compact package. I would speculate this is a relatively ripe example of the grape.

old world based on lower alcohol, earth, acidity

possible varietals -- PN, gamay, temp,

Gamay seemed a good bet in a blind tasting (I thought 2008) -- now that I know it is a Poulsard, I have these characteristics:

    1. include Poulsard when speaking about light skinned grapes
    2. explore the "sense of earth" I noted above ... what is the soil?
    3. Blind taste a poulsard against PN and Gamay

I do not have a PN or Gamay in front of me, but the Poulsard has:
-- definately more aggressive terroir. The grape flavor of fruit seems mild compared to the soil
--very good balance, but this may be the excellent producer
-- candied without being "candied" in that negative way, it is completely dry but has a confected mouthfeel
-- the light red fruit flavor and darker undertones of terroir allow it to be paired in interesting ways ... perhaps a salmon with a textured sauce ...

  • Very closed on the first day. Showing very little; just some sour cherry notes. It was undrinkable on the second night and had a very unpleasant smoky finish.

  • Tight this needs 2 or 3 more years.
Loved the nose: earthy, funky with nice bright fruit. Light and fresh, balanced, smooth tannins, showing again earthy notes.
    Like a funky pinot.
    Will improve.
