Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 42 notes)

Tasted by vindictive on 9/22/2009: I have had this wine many times and have always enjoyed it. In the past it has been quite primary improving considerably with ample air. It has always been a good match for meat and tomato pasta dishes. This bottle was much more advanced and had a more weedy, Cabernet-family nose. Blind, I would not have guessed that this is mostly Sangiovese. The style here reminded me more of some other super tuscans such as Sassacaia (it never did in the past). This improved with air and it was enjoyed by all, but I liked it less than before. This bottle did not have any leather or spice that I associate with sangiovese and acted more like a cab/merlot-type wine with some Bordeaux-like characteristics. It did battle with a Provencal chicken dish and did not handle the tomato acidity as well as usual. A curious showing given prior experience - ? evolution of the wine or just an odd bottle.  Tasted by JGarofalo3 on 8/6/2009 & rated 91 points: I had picked up a bunch of this juice after some tastings at the estate in Tuscany. 97 was the first year Ricasoli blended any Merlot with the Sangiovese (previous vintages were 100% Sangiovese). in 97 they used just a smattering of Merlot (less that 10%) subsequent years they went up to a 75/25 ratio and I "believe" today the blend is even more balanced. This was opened and sat for 90 minutes before a decant anticipating sedimentation allowing it to settle. This did throw off a fair amount of sediment.

Dark and rich in the glass with a slight bricking the nose was rather muted but there were hints of mocha, meat and a little cigar box (however it could have been me and my summer sinuses...LOL). This wine was fantastic. In my opinion this is a big wine with a beautiful oppulent mouthfeel it was really lovely ending with a very nice finish.

Not sure how much longer this could age (my cork was almost soaked through) but is a joy to drink. Allowed to breathe or pop and pour a decant is a must!

Four yums: Yum....yum....yum.......yum!!! (580 views)
Tasted by vindictive on 3/27/2009: Nice wine and probably some upside here. I am not a big fan of the 1997 Tuscan wines since many are imbalanced and do not seem to have the requisite structure for aging; however, this wine has more Sangiovese finesse and tannic backbone. It opens up nicely over a few hours and pairs well with Tuscan dishes. I like its ability to handle acidity (such as tomato) and beef. I have tried this multiple times over several years and it is a consistent performer. Try this with a nice bolognese sauce or spaghetti and meat balls. Molto Bene! (911 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 12/29/2008 & rated 91 points: Opened this supertuscan with Haggis and his wife at their home in Honolulu. Similar notes as when I first had this but not as thick as when I last had this 6 years ago. Notes of spice, violets and red fruit. Still full bodied and holding up very well. 91 points. (1005 views)
Tasted by JScott on 9/23/2008 & rated 92 points: From magnum. MUCH better than my last experience. Earthy, mulberry nose. Don't know the blend, but Merlot seems more dominant, though you can certainly find Sangiovese notes underneath. Touch of brett. Long. From this format still has lots of time left. (1157 views)

Tasted by Sedimentary on 3/27/2008 & rated 91 points: This one kicks ass. It is starting to show signs of age in the bricking, but the wine is still fresh and long on the nose and palate. Had this with calves liver with bacon and onions and was stellar!! Wish I had more and am anticipating trying future vintages as 2000, 1999 and 1997 have all been spectacular. Farewell old friend (1624 views)
Tasted by Marco68 on 1/31/2008 & rated 88 points: The wine exhibits a purple colour with garnet rim,at the nose, without decanting, black cherry, cherry, tobacco, vanilla, roasted herbs and spices. The entry is smooth with nice acidity, mature tannins with ripe fruits, round and well balanced, decent persistance in the final.Casalferro 1997 is a ready drinking that does not need some more cellaring.Perfect food matching with meat.  Tasted by simpsonr on 1/28/2008 & rated 89 points: Garnet with brick tints. Muted nose of dried cherries and spices. The palate is somewhat flat with some unresolved tannin and decent acid. Not a great showing. (1994 views)
Tasted by jdunnuck on 1/27/2008 & rated 92 points: Leadville; 1/25/2008-1/28/2008 (Sean's House, Leadville, CO): While this bottle was tight and stubbornly backwards, it possesses enough power, depth and structure to make me think this will open up with additional bottle age. The nose takes some coaxing but reveals rich, deep, decadent cherry fruit notes that are backed up by pot roast, mocha and dried flower aromas. The palate is medium to full bodied with integrated, toasty oak flavors that are buffeted by plenty of rich fruit, a nice texture and a medium to long finish. There's some real weight and depth to this wine and I think it's only going to get better. (2083 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 1/21/2008: This seems to have aged very quickly. I definitely would have guessed this to be older than it is. Notes of tea and aged fruit on the palate. Not as vibrant as I would have liked. (2032 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 9/9/2007 & rated 90 points: (at Café Troia – Baltimore) Deeper garnet / purple. Red meat and new wood mixed with sweaty underwear. Some nice strawberry/raspberry peaks through. A new wood monster on the palate which is too bad as the underlying fruit is fantastic. (90+?) (2250 views)
Tasted by lpokeefe on 7/25/2007: Decanted for one hour, significant sediment. Drinking nicely. Subdued fruit, nice mouthfeel. (2176 views)

Tasted by JScott on 3/4/2007 & rated 88 points: (1.5) Almost no nose. Nice on the palate but really much more subdued than I had expected. Was this a root night or something?? On the whole a relative disappointment. (2741 views)
Tasted by KellyW on 1/16/2007 & rated 94 points: Threw a bit more sediment this time but still just a great bottle of sangiovese drinking perfectly now. (2988 views)
Tasted by KellyW on 12/11/2006 & rated 93 points: Drinking perfectly now. No signs of going south soon. (3004 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 9/25/2006 & rated 91 points: Most enjoyable bottle yet (3153 views)
Tasted by TripDaddy on 8/26/2006 & rated 92 points: Drink now. At its peak. Pretty darn tasty. Much better than my last bottle. (3511 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 8/9/2006 & rated 89 points: Another good bottle after a couple of duds. Drinking well, would recommend drinking these within 2 - 3 years (3240 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 8/7/2006 & rated 90 points: This was the second straight highly enjoyable bottle of this wine after two duds, again likely due to cork being in good condition. Silky smoothe, probably at or near its peak of drinkability. (3256 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 7/5/2006 & rated 92 points: After six years of cellar time since release, this 1997 has reached full maturity. Cask notes and horse stable on the fore. The nose has fresh minerality, with plums, dark cherries and a jammy touch of merlot. Tannins are totally softened. Really memorable drinking experience with cheese. (2652 views)
Tasted by sailcappy on 6/23/2006 & rated 89 points: (2713 views)
Tasted by Sedimentary on 5/11/2006 & rated 89 points: This one STILL is carrying some baby fat on it. Big boy tannins have receded slightly, but the fruit as dimmed a bit as a result. The acid level actually seems higher now than it did 3-4 years ago. There is no sign of fade or bricking at the edge, and the leathery mushroom component is also now hidden more behind the acid. Will try the last bottle in a few more years, as this has been fun watching it's evolution over the last 6 years. (3781 views)

Rockss and Fruit (11/25/2004)
(Barone Ricasoli Casalferro) Great nose right out of the gates big with a mixture of incense -like aromas, spicy well-integrated oak, dark cherries, mint and a floral lift. Well developed fruit flavors of dusty dark cherry fruit and barely noticeable tannins. This was ready to go and had a nice mouthfeel and a great finish. This wine was quite explosive in it's youth and has aged well even getting some elegance.
