  • Retail $65? 100% Pinot Noir. From one of the appellations in the Côte de Beaune that does not get as much attention as others in the region, and certainly nowhere near the respect that wines from the Côte de Nuits garner. For a while, that was fine to me as that meant they were still (relatively) affordable. Not any more. This wine, that I paid around $15 in 2007? It is likely at least 3-4 times that today. I liked the first two bottles of this wine I tried several years ago (92 Points both times). This one, though, I am going to bump it up a notch. Sure, the fruit has faded, but it is still hanging on, the acidity is outstanding, and the secondary and tertiary aromas and flavors are off the charts. The nose is astounding: black cherry and raspberry with mocha, interestingly, and tons of fall aromas with clove, sage, and even pumpkin spice. The palate is reserved, as one would expect, but it is also loaded with many of the flavors that the nose suggested and the finish is lingering and impressive. Outstanding.

  • Retail $50? 100% Pinot Noir. I bought this wine way back in 2005 and, well, I have only consumed one of the four bottles until now. Upon opening, I was disappointed, to say the least. It was not "bad" per se, but it was a bit listless and came off as rather stewed. So I put a cork in it and opened something else. What a difference a day makes. While certainly short of opulent, this wine is on the fruity side with dark cherry, pomegranate, and even cranberry. The palate is delightful, impeccably balanced, with a lasting finish. Wonderful. thedrunkencyclist.com

  • I have to say this is fairly dark as wines from the Côte de Beaune go and the nose is equally as brooding with black raspberry, a bit of cassis, and even some pine tar. On the palate it is more of the same with dark berry fruit, a bit of menthol, and a touch of earth. I have to say this is not what I expected from a decade and a half old Burg, particularly from Savigny, but it works. I would hazard to say this is much more new than old world, but delightful nonetheless. thedrunkencyclist.com

(Pavelot Jean-Marc et Hugues Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Peuillets) From terre-rouge, the vineyard is full of small stones, this cuvée typically sees around 10% new oak. Similar intensity of colour, but a deeper shade. The nose is also a little deeper, gently supported by some oak. Finer tannins and an extra dimension of complexity. Lovely acidity pushed the finish much longer than that of the villages. Very well balanced.
