This one had been on my list for the myth that has come to life about this wine! After 89 and 90, which were two fantastic years to end a decade in style, 1991 started off very badly. The frost struck on April 20th/21st, with temperatures dipping to nearly minus 10 degrees Celsius in some areas, and more than 50% of the harvest in Bordeaux, especially among the big houses, was destroyed. But, miraculously, Montrose managed to escape this fate because its vineyard lies almost over 1km along the banks of the Gironde. The water that night, having almost a 15-degree difference, meant that there was virtually no damage due frost at Montrose, and they still produced a fine wine. While wine connoisseurs often overlook '91, here you have a gem.
Now about the wine itself: The nose was beautiful and classically elegant, undeniably a fine old Bordeaux with figs, tobacco, eucalyptus, pepper, and a bit of exotic spices. The wine showed no signs of "past its prime" in the nose, a solid 8/10, and while nothing was off-putting in the mouth, there was a lack of depth; it was no longer as lingering. If you drink this wine without food, you'll enjoy it immensely; it has finesse and is delicate, but it won't get any better, so if you have this lying around, serve it blind and you'll wow many a wine lover!

Early Mar 2024, Rheingau Gourmet Festival, rarity diner “25 vintages of Chateau Montrose”: according to the sommelier double decanted for up to 3 hours; dark red color; restrained cassis aromas in the nose; noble with a well-balanced acidity on the palate.
Noch erstaunlich junges Rubinrot, wenig Alterstöne. In der Nase anfangs still, braucht etwas Zeit, tiefgründig, kühl, steinig, rotfruchtig, grüne Paprika. Im Gaumen straff, karg, leichter Körper, gute Struktur, eher auf der trockenen Seite, jedoch noch erstaunlich gut im Saft. Kurzer, rotfruchtiger Abgang mit Tabakaromen im Retrofinale. Trinken. www.vvwine.ch
