  • Most peculiar wine which still show a lovely primary fruit but also tons of luxurious oak. The fruit is very Merlot like, silky, soft and velvety with abundant blueberry, sweet liquorice, anise seeds(!) and leathery notes. The palate adds to the full throttle experience with oak, acidity and totally integrated tannins. The wine needs a lot of air to open up, at first sniff after popping the cork, there is a lot of reductive tones, sulphuric smell and match box, but after some 30 minutes in the glass, this disappears totally. A lovely wine, which needs to be accepted for what it is. Certainly not your average Zweigelt, but an experience that certainly is interesting.

  • The 2007 Schwarz Zweigelt has developed nicely since last tasting. The nose is deep and full of dark mature fruit, but also a very evident tone of lilacs and violets combined with roasted pepper and a subtle touch of vanilla cardamom. The palate is full and lush exhibiting the very best of this grape varietal. Still there is a slightly short length on the finish, but it has certainly improved compared to March 2010. This is a profound effort from a micro producer, which apparently needed several years to develop. (score is 92-93)

  • The Falstaff guide thinks the 2007 Schwarz Zweigelt is one of Austrias three best red wines. The wine delivers at its best when paired with massive food including red meats and oven roasted root-crops. Floral nose, tons of boysenberries penetrating a medium finish. Oak and tannins are nicely integrated but this wine is actually a bit over the top. You just wait for "more" of everything when tasting, but waiting is all there is. Being a bit harsh I also need to say this wine drinks very well right now. If you want to know what a Zweigelt could be like - try this one...
