Drinking quite nicely and really still on the young side so no rush on this. Peppery and fruity. Touch more of the new world intensity to it. Prob could have done with a proper decant. Still quite tasty.

Beautifully rich, deeply flavored, excellent acidity, fine tannins, long finish, becomes a bit more tannic with air. Tasted in a blind flight of 4 older Northern Rhones, this stood slightly apart, more because of its purity of fruit and overall richness, and most probably that the Rhones use whole cluster fermenetation while this is destemmed.

One hour decant, the nose is steep, with dark fruits and herbal notes appearing. The palate begins on the tight side, even with 19 years of age on it but slowly unwinds to express blackberry, light oak notes, bracing acidity and deep toned tannins. The mouthfeel is driven by the tannins, if you like a lot of structure in a glass of wine you will enjoy this. A very long finish closes out what still comes across as a bottle that has room for more improvement.

Alongside the 1998. Equally rich, but this ‘99 is more balanced. Both showcasing ripe black cherry and plum, roasted meat, and faint earth.
