Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 84.6 pts. and median of 85 pts. in 18 notes)

Tasted by sayward on 4/17/2009 & rated 85 points: This tastes like a raspberry wine. Very sweet to the point of being a little disgusting. We drank it after roasted chicken, ladies liked it, guys hated it. (998 views)
Tasted by Meerlust on 2/15/2009: This dessert wine was as expected - sweet with black raspberry and a bit of stemminess. Uncomplicated but it paired beautifully with chocolate lave cake. (1087 views)
Tasted by Green on 12/30/2007 & rated 75 points: Not nearly as great as I thought it would be. Hopefully decanting would help... but our crowd was unimpressed with its flavor and lack of complexity. Secretly hoping it was the framboise... Oh well. (1873 views)
Tasted by rkwine on 9/23/2007 & rated 90 points: yummy, as always. a bit on the sweet side. (2414 views)
Tasted by EricFromMD on 7/9/2007 & rated 80 points: Not my cup of tea although some may like it. Super sweet with lots of alcohol and black rasberry flavors. Like jell-o that didn't jell. (2476 views)
Tasted by RomanKJ on 7/8/2007 & rated 82 points: Dark purple color. Raspberry and blackberry flavors, but very, very sweet. A touch artificial. My bro's TN ("like jello mix that didn't set") nailed it. I wasn't crazy about it and it wasn't a big hit with the family. If I had any more I'd let them age and see what happens. (2745 views)
Tasted by jmoskow on 6/4/2007 & rated 82 points: Very viscous and sweet. This is very chewy and heavy. Not subtle at all. (2670 views)
Tasted by javadrinker on 3/17/2007 & rated 84 points: (2415 views)
Tasted by davetong on 3/12/2007 & rated 87 points: Left half the bottle on the counter; didn't bother to refrigerate because I wanted it to oxidise a bit. It definitely made a positive difference. I'm thinking a couple of years in the cellar or an hour or two in the decanter will pay dividends. (2982 views)
Tasted by dougsmith on 3/10/2007 & rated 85 points: Deep black color with a ruby rim. Somewhat artificial nose of raspberry syrup, with a touch of oak, lots of heat. On the palate this has good acid balance but just falls off, with a watery finish. Port-like sweetness, but lacking weight and finish. OK with dark chocolate. (2986 views)
Tasted by davetong on 3/8/2007 & rated 85 points: Is there more than one Bouteille Call? This one is a grape and raspberry blend; the actual grape isn't listed. It could be syrah, but then it could be almost anything really.
Nose is of cooked raspberries - slightly artificial, but that's probably from the alcohol. On the palate it reminds me of raspberry flavoured chocolate - similar to (but by no means as bad as) those raspberry Hersheys Kisses that you get around Valentine's day. Would probably pair well with chocolate or a dark fruit dessert. I dare say that it will age quite well too.
Not particularly earth shattering, but right now they are clearing it out at $25 a case do even after shipping it's a pretty good deal. (3054 views)

Tasted by andrewstevenson.com on 10/2/2006 & rated 88 points: This a blend of grape wine, raspberry wine and grape spirits.  It has a big crème de framboise nose.  Silky smooth on the palate, with a perfumed and chocolatey richness.  The spirit is just evident towards the finish.  Pleasant after.  Unlike anything else.  (2693 views)
Tasted by Tubbs on 3/30/2006 & rated 88 points: Monthly Methuselah Tasting (The McCrary's): Lovely delicate nose of rose petals and violets. Thick blackberry on the palate. A fun wine with a clipped finish, and somewhat lacking in acid. (4098 views)
Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 3/13/2006: Raspberry pie nose. Very sweet, intense framboise and little body or stuffing. Nice acids made this go very well w/ cheeses. Gave rest of bottle away. (3721 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 9/10/2005 & rated 87 points: Bonny Doon Tasting Room (Santa Cruz, CA): This was interesting. Very thick even for port. The sweetness wasn't overwhelming, but it was a touch hot. It was also a touch disjoint with the rasberry mixed in. Jen kinda liked it. I thought it was interesting and very drinkable, but it didn't jump out as great. (4017 views)
Tasted by Wel Rommel on 7/4/2005 & rated 85 points: Raspberries, chocolate, and perhaps a touch of nougat. It took a long time to get through the bottle...a bit too much going on here for me. While it definitely provided a lot to discover with each sip, there were too many elements that, together, created a concoction that was -- to me -- slightly medicinal. Still, we enjoyed having had this port, particularly when paired with pieces of dark, bittersweet chocolate. (3896 views)
Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 3/27/2003: Really good - very framboise-y with nice tannic backbone. Port-like, but richer and more friendly. Nice chocolate-y and coffee notes. Very pleasing.

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
