  • I hardly ever experienced a 1954 wine, also due to its bad reputation. Surprise, surprise, this wine had a beautiful floral and earthy nose , in the mouth elegant and soft with some remnants of fruit, mint, nice acidity, dry tannins. Tasting 52-53-54 at house of friend Frans, meal prepared by Eugenie.

  • Translucent but with a ruby core. On the nose rose hip, potpourri, eucalyptus, tobacco, cardamom, roasted meat, laurel. Very cohesive and layered. Finely grained tannins, enduring adicity and concentration, soft, feminine, utterly complex and rich. An acidic undercurrent provides liveliness, tension and youth. There's a crescendo on the mid-palate that is confounding and very pretty.

Wine of the night for me. Thanks FransS!

  • My 5th 1952(+) tasting (At amy home, Haarlem, The Netherlands): Dear Xavier, the '54 Montrose you have tasted in 2005 at Christe's came from a lot I've bought with a friend. At that occasion we have given Michael Broadbent a bottle from the lot, because he had not tasted this vintage. I heve opened the bottle for a special friend, Peter Bruins, the retired sommelier and host of the two-star restaurant De Bokkedoorns.
And now the wine: level base of neck, no chateau bottling, a medium deep colour, still with some red, thyme, a whiff of anise, gentle vanilla, modest wood, the red fruit came in the taste, quite juicy, excellent acidity (not showing its age), concentrated and with lively tannins. The following hours after I had opened the bottle the wine kept its qualities and its aftertaste; a big surprise for all of us.

  • Christie's Pre-Sale Tasting (Amsterdam): Very lively, not bad at all, a nice suprise.
