Aged Bordeaux Gems (with Unico/Heitz MV in the mix): Magnum. Top shoulder level. This is a wonderful Sauternes, although still quite young and not at its peak. Expressive, concentrated, elegant and fairly complex. That certain je ne sais quoi, that extra sharpness and one or two more layers (which more age will certainly add) are missing today to get a higher score but it was still damn delicious.
TN: Intense saffron notes on the nose which pushes everything else that might be there into the background. But it‘s a damn good and intriguing saffron expression. More nuanced on the palate with saffron, peaches, apricots, citrus, vanilla, malt. Nicely complex and with good precision. The sweetness is well kept in check by a high acidity. Good length too.
Decanting: Double decanted only. No extensive decant needed.

Magnum rarities tasting (Near Basel): This was part of a rarity old wine tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. All (almost) bottles were from magnum and double-decanted. The line-ups was dominated by aged Bordeaux, but also included two vintages of Unico and one from Martha's Vineyard. The undisputed winners were Pichon Lalande 82 and Lynch Bages 82. The most memorable, however, was the Pontet Canet 29 and St Croix Dumonts 21. The Unico (60, 65) were underwhelming as was – once again for me – Mouton 82.
Tasting note: Magnum. Candid fruit, lots of nutty aromas, a few spices in the mix. Incredibly powerful, creamy, viscous, intense and flavorful palate. This deserves standing ovations for integrity and structure, but I personally prefer weightless elegance and a more supple character.

Richter magnum tasting, all wines out of Magnum: Creme brulee, plastic, vanilla, brioche, nice sweetness, beautifully mature sauternes
