  • This pours very light garnet in the glass. The nose is fully mature, maybe a touch past prime, but still alive. Aromas are of worn leather, rusty iron, beef blood, mushroom, mint, decaying cedar, dried red currant, dried cranberry, brown sugar, and a faint whiff of rose petal. The palate is bright and elegant, prominently featuring the red fruit, with medium plus acid and low dusty tannin. Just a fabulous mouthfeel and more vibrant on the palate than the nose. The finish closes on decaying cedar and tart and sweet cranberry with a touch of iron. All in all this is showing nicely. Quite mature and near end of life. A far cry from the mesmerizing 1980 I enjoyed a few years back, but still quite nice.

  • Cant believe how alive this wine still is! Opened alongside a 2010 Drouhin Mouches and several of us agreed it was the better of the two! Cork was perfect and the wine was basically PnP, then followed in the glass over about two hours and it continued to hold up well with air. Plenty of sous bois but also still a brightness underlying it that lent it life and helped it pair really well with duck confit. a well stored bottle of 81 may still have some life but open this up and enjoy!
