  • Old German Riesling et al. (Chicago, IL): Disgorged November 2000. This was a wine that was hard to pin down; it seemed to be a rapidly moving target. The colour on this in incredible -- it was pretty much a smidgen darker than the 2000 P2 that I had along side. The nose clearly shows pinot, with loads of mushroom and all sorts of other savoury, nutty, and briny stuff. It reminds me a little of the smell of the warm water when you put dehydrated shiitakes in it. Slight hint of fizz still, but that really only lasted for an hour before it dissipated. The palate is extremely rich and broad, and that's the aspect here that I loved the most. There's practically no fruit left here -- really it reminds me a lot of old red Burgundy (that's clean -- no dirt or stank here) than anything else. Extremely savoury, but with still a generous amount of acidity to cut through everything. With air, this got more and more vinous (see Jefford's nice essay in Decanter on the definition). An extremely interesting wine that was also quite good, and while I preferred it with a hint of bubbles, I don't think it was undrinkable flat.

  • From what I understand this used to be more chardonnay-heavy than it is now, which this definitely feels like. This was a 2000ish disgorgement, and at this stage is pretty free of effervescence and drinking much more like a champagne liqueur. It is, however, fairly bright and with good citricity and acidity to keep it reasonably well supported. The flavors are orange-toned and bold, and also very clean. Almonds. Old for my tastes, but certainly fun to try.

  • I am probably being very harsh, but my benchmark was the 1964 magnum of CDG that I drank in 2008 and which to this day is one of only five wines I have ever given a 100 rating to. Like that bottle, this too was a magnum straight from the cellars of Philipponnat. It was disgorged in Sept. 2008. It had all the characteristics of very old CDG: a beautiful gold brush colour, the characteristic pinot noir nose, and microscopic yet powerful bubbles. This wine exhibited the candyfloss oil that very old PN based champagne sometimes have. It was a playful wine: it was trying to seduce me by changing itself, and dancing in front of me with a veil of secrecy. Very "1001 nights". I enjoyed it a lot.
