SQN & BBQ (The Krengels - Bannockburn IL): Small glass, brief note from memory. Reductive start gave this the Alban touch that doesn't thrill me. Extremely ripe and fat without the requisite acidity and structure to make this come across as remotely balanced to me. Not my style of wine.

This is a massively huge wine especially when opened alongside the 2003 SQN Papa. This wine reminded me of Spinal Tap where they want more, so they turn it past 10 and go to 11. Aromas of hot asphalt and tar with blueberry jam. Rich sweet and decadent on the palate with showy boisenberry fruit dominating. Sexy texture, quite concentrated, and long. Finishes a bit hot. No wonder with 16.5% alcohol. A few sips were nice, but hard to drink a full pour let alone abottle. For me, John went a bit too big here. Still fun to try and does pack a very good punch in more ways then one.

After all of these years, this wine is still a beast in terms of fruit and alcohol. There is sage, may be mint and pepper besides all the fantastic fruit. How can a central coast wine from California be so powerful after thirteen years? Someone's sweat and brain, besides a hack of a lot of good luck, and shear hard labor went into this to make it last as long as it did. It is another testament what humans can do. If we could just focus on saving all this beauty of this planet for the next few generations....we have to.

(Alban Vineyards Syrah Seymour's Vineyard) Tight berry and clove nose; big, tight, smoky, berry, milk chocolate palate, with more sweetness and noticeable oak than the '99, needs time; medium-plus finish

Impressive but just so huge and dense. Really does drink more like a port. Drink now. 16.5%
