Valandrau vertical (1991-2020) (Fribourg): Selected tasting notes from a complete Valandraud vertical (1991-2020) hosted by a collector with an estate representative. Main observation was that both the work the estate did during the transition phase 2000-2012 is clearly bearing fruit in more recent vintages, further helped by warmer growing seasons that are favorable for this cool site in St Emillon. Additional comments included in the tasting story.
Tasting note: This was decanted prior to serving. Ripe and rather dark cherry fruit, some heat, linoleum or waxy touch and dried rose leaves. Fresh acidity with more heat and still drying tannin. Adds more attractive aging notes of dried leaves with only a few minutes in the glass.

Elegant and intense with well balanced pronounced flavours, still peaking with slight notions towards mild decline. Made from 75% Merlot and 25% CF, aged for 22 months in new oak. Deep garnet colour. Intense aroma of smoky strawberries, earth, dried black cherries, tobacco, cold cuts, mocha, medicine cabinet. Medium body, rich and deep with smoky and roasted flavours, earthy notes, medium+ fine tannins. Loved the structure and density with well balanced persistent flavours and long finish.

Drank on SuperBowl sunday, which now seems a long time ago…. But this was drinking really well for my palate. Right bank style, fruity but well balanced with earthy notes and some leather. On the palate perhaps the first signs of fading but nice long finish and just a really lovely wine with Waygu smash burgers! Or on its own…

Solid mature bordeaux. Roasty and smooth. Missed more depth for the reputation. Nice wine but not worth the money.

From magnum, solid right bank in an enjoyable phase of development. Tannins are soft, fruit it on the racier side, great with steaks. Drink or hold.
