  • Still dark, but starting to turn brickish at the rim
Lovely nose of leather and tobacco leaf - a highlight of the experience with this wine
Classic bordeaux palate of raspberry and strawberry with tobacco leaf and a bit of green tomato
Currently the wine leans slightly to the austere side and fruit-wise may be starting to decline. I think I would not wait any longer to drink these

  • From a bottle purchased on the secondary with a base neck fill. No sign of bricking. Peonies, red berries, and a touch of rhubarb and undergrowth on the nose, with floral elements, red berries, and currants on the silky but energetic palate. 13.5% ABV (very good; distinctive/***/16/90)

  • My last bottle of the 2000, this is in a good place. Cassis, dark fruits, plus some leather and smoke indicating a bit of age. I’d love to try a bottle in 10 years - I expect the fruit will have mostly backed off but the tertiary flavors will accompany a silky, elegant wine.

  • Decanted for an hour. Delicious on the nose, strong cassis, with hints of leather and barnyard, mature, but the fruit is still prominently there. The palate shows mature fruit, dark fruit with cassis and a bit of pomegranate, tannins still obvious, hints of smoke. This is great right now, delicious, mature, and went well with grilled meats and vegetables!

  • Lunch at Tang Yun (Tang Yun, Tanglin Club, Singapore): Big, ripe, modern and certainly very, very youthful for a 2000; quite delicious though. The nose was huge, but very attractive, with deep notes of sweet plums and ripe berries, haw flakes, all seasoned with spice and smoke, and a little hint of earthiness. The palate was very youthful. Tannins were velvety, but still definitely present and giving a gentle grip. It had good acidity too, with a nice brightness to its ripe flavours of dark plums and berries, all these chased by a bit of earth and orange peel all the way into a nicely spiced finish. Nothing earthshaking, but this was a yummy, food-friendly wine, with many years left in its tank.
