Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco Martinenga: 1978 to 2007 (Acquerello, San Francisco): Light ruby to rose. Oddly candied nose that diminishes somewhat but makes me wonder about chaptalization. Sweet fruit, earthy finish. Seems artificial with little finesse, although it does improve and display some licorice. Late, some VA appears on the scene, leading to a pretty clipped finish. Not one of the highlights.

(Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy Barbaresco Martinenga) Bricked, slightly cloudy, light medium red color with pale meniscus; mature, VA, baked sour cherry, oak spice nose with a little oxidation; tasty, tart cherry, tart red plum, light hoisin sauce, spiced cherry palate; ready now, and should go 8-10 years; medium-plus finish
