This Bonarda 60%/Malbec 40% blend was still juicy and flavorful at 11 years on. Not a particular favorite but certainly well made. At $16 a bottle at the Garagiste shop (Den?) it was a decent buy.

Although my big wine / fruit bomb days of glory are mostly behind me - here was the outlier to make me believe again. Nowadays when a wine is this fruit-forward, the rest of the profile seems to fall apart.. ie. it's disjointed, flabby, cloying etc. But a perfect marriage of components - at this particular time, with this particular bottle - helped the juice inside become more than the sum of said components. Phenomenal stuff. And for the $13 & change plonked down at auction: perhaps the best QPR ever.

(PATRIOTA Tikal) Patriota Dear Friends, Talk about deals? I've had previous vintages of this wine and all have been good but the 2008 is at another level. Quantities are somewhat limited on this but, I will say, it wouldn't surprise me if this was one of the most celebrated reds of the season. It appeals to every corner of the crowd in some way - oenophiles, neophytes and casual observers alike. Everyone will find something to swoon over here as it combines depth, harmony, intrigue, spice and robust flavor with a grandiose sense of order usually absent in the $15 price range. Don't get me wrong, this is a large-scaled wine and many of you could easily drink it without contemplation but I believe it begs for a bit of dissection along with a more in-depth peek through the looking-glass - especially after 2-3 hours of air. At $15+, wine-speak is probably a moot point: A vinous concoction that does not mince words or care if you are offended by its exotic nature - it's a wedding/backyard wine extraordinaire that will be a certain house-choice for a large contingent of our email list. This parcel is directly from the source (the 2008 is not very easy to find at present): 2008 Tikal Patriota (Bonarda/Malbec) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Arg9911

Not a sipper. Good with strongly flavoured food. It was even better the next day with excellent cheese.
