Wine Dinner at Le Philosophe (Le Philosophe): 50% sangiovese, 25% merlot and 25% cab. The wine pours an inky purple color with a ruby rim and medium legs. A concentrated and floral bouquet of tobacco, cherries, blackberries and spice. Some pepper on the nose. On the palate, the wine exhibits a robust structure with velvety and slightly sweet tannins. There are flavors of kirsch, smoke and mulch. Pretty expansive palate with a robust finish, lasting around 30 seconds. Great wine.
Decanted for about an hour. Nose of tar and licorice. Still purple in color with no sign of aging. A little jumbled right now, with fruit, tannins, acidity all seeming to be out of balance. It is in that transition phase between youthful fruit and graceful elegance. But having said that, it was still a wonderful wine. Plush and rich fruit flavors with minerals and herbs as secondary flavors. This needs time to come together and integrate all the wonderful things going on here. Give this at least one more year probably more. My score for what it is today. I am sure that it will jump up considerably.
